Location

Awakino Point Boutique Motel is situated on its own acreage surrounded by attractive gardens and farmland just 2 minutes drive from the township of Dargaville. We are located just 2kms along State Highway 14 from the town centre towards Whangarei. Look for our sign on the left.

Dargaville is a rural community on the West Coast of Northland, New Zealand.

How to find us

Driving times from Dargaville include 2 hours to Auckland, 30 minutes to Matakohe, 45 minutes to Whangarei, 15 minutes to Baylys Beach (West Coast), 25 minutes to Kai Iwi Lakes, 1.5 hours to the Bay of Islands, 1 hour to Waipoua Forest (home of Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's oldest Kauri Tree) and 1.5 hours from Opononi and Omapere on the Hokianga Harbour.

Dargaville is well located for your first or last night stay in New Zealand. Why not visit the famous Matakohe Kauri Museum on your way through to/from Auckland. Base yourself at the Awakino Point Boutique Motel for accommodation when exploring the Kauri Coast. Spectacular Baylys Beach and Kai Iwi Lakes are not to be missed, on your way to visit Tane Mahuta in the Waipoua Forest.

Activities in the Dargaville & Kauri Coast Area

On the twin coast discovery route just 30 mins south of Dargaville is the famous Kauri Museum. It takes quite some time to go through, so after leaving the museum it’s usually too late to carry on up north through the forest.

Waipoua Forest is about an hour north of Dargaville. Most tourists will leisurely motor up through the winding forest route and take a walk through the forest to view the trees and then carry on up to the Bay Of Islands.

You will need to take a night in or around Dargaville, no matter which direction you are travelling in to experience both of these attractions on the Twin Coast Discovery Route comfortably.

Dargaville has many things to do and see and is steeped in the history of the Kauri logging and the ship building days. After the logging, came the Dalmatians who dug the Kauri gum. They were hard times for these people and they were the pioneers of this area.

Baylys Beach is the longest drivable beach in New Zealand at over 100 kms in length and you can drive every inch of the way. You can hire quad bikes and have fun on the beach up and down the sand dunes or go for an exhilarating drive along the beach.

Or you can take a 4WD beach safari where the operator will drive you to the best fishing spots and supply all your tackle and lunch if you want it.

Or you can take a trip to the bluff or the lighthouse and maybe see seals and penguins as I have seen many times before.

I think one of the best kept secrets is the wonderful coastal golf course out there. It’s only a 10-minute drive from Dargaville to this unspoilt, fabulous, golden sandy beach. It will blow the cobwebs out of your hair and out of your lungs if you have just had a long flight.

There are artists aplenty with potters, painters, lead light work, spinners, weavers, patchwork, jewellery, wood turners and wood carvers. You name it; it’s being made in Dargaville. Some offer tuition or weekend packages for training and accommodation

Dargaville Museum lookout has the best views in town overlooking the township and the great Northern Wairoa River and surrounding area. You can walk around the mast of Greenpeace which is there to commemorate the loss of a good man and a good ship in their efforts towards world peace.

You won’t have any trouble getting lost for a couple of hours inside the museum with all the Kauri & maritime exhibits and local historical pictures.

Dargaville makes a nice stop off place between the Kauri Museum Matakohe and the Waipoua Kauri forest where there are trees there that have been growing since the days Jesus was walking this planet.

Just before you get to Dargaville travelling from the south you will come upon the old Toka Toka pub. Just behind that pub you can see a very high peak. It’s an extinct volcano cone of which there are only five in the world. You can climb to the top of this peak if you turn right and go up the road behind the pub.

Dargaville has a massive tidal river which used to be used as a main means of transport in the logging and ship building days. As it’s a tidal river the sand is being continually churned up from the bottom.

You will find this a tidy, friendly little town where people have the time to talk to you and has lots to offer you on your journey to and from the Bay Of Islands.

Have a great trip; we hope to see you on our patch. Kind Regards June & Mick
